Typically the Miracle And then the Spirit: Idols.

In this number of articles, we have been discussing specialness and more specifically spiritual specialness because it is becoming a prevalent form in the Course community. Like all forms of specialness, spiritual specialness is a defense of the ego (against the opposite). It maintains the separation in your head as the spiritual reason for differences. In this fifth article, we’re going to create the discussion around to idols because it is intended in A Course in Miracles (ACIM).

You will recall from the fourth article on fragmentation, we are trying to become alert to whenever we are choosing the ego (Ken Wapnick) because the ego could be the area of the mind that believes in division (T-5.V.3). Idols should warrant consideration and learning because they are ego:

Idol could be the symbol of the substitution of the ego for the true Self or god; a false belief that there may be something other than, or more than God, and thus separate from Him, a belief which is then projected onto the special relationship: people, things or ideas (Glossary-Index for A Course in Miracles, Kindle location 550).

Here is the reply to every problem that’ll confront you. These days, you think you’re sustained by everything but God. Your faith is placed in the absolute most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the “right” people, and an endless set of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers. All these specific things are your replacements for the Love of God (Lesson 50).

Here within the dream, or illusion, the phrase symbol definition for “idol” is, “An individual or thing that’s greatly admired, loved or revered.” Within the last article on fragmentation, we also discussed how spiritually special Course teachers are cult leaders and the phrase symbol definition for a “cult” which most do not consider is, “A misplaced or excessive admiration for a certain person or thing.” All of these symbols point to the same: Specialness in all its forms are idols meant to restore the Love of God and maintain the separation in the mind.

Throughout this series we’ve also described spiritual specialness as caring who they share the stage or limelight with, i.e., the special relationship and teaching their particular ego version of the truth. Pun intended on this one: Let’s finish setting the stage because of this discussion with these quote from yet another author:

Everybody is trying to find and express their truth¬†a course in miracles. Their so-called the fact is actually designed to help keep them stuck where they are. What J is teaching in his Course is that the reality is not different for everyone. It is not relative. He’s saying the reality is the truth whether you understand and accept it or not. The reality is not at the mercy of your interpretation, and neither is his Course. He’s the Teacher, you’re the student. If that’s not the case, then why do the Course? (The Disappearance of the Universe, Gary Renard, page 92).

Idols of Specialness

Kenneth Wapnick is known for saying that the Course isn’t for folks who believe they are “spiritual giants” which spiritual specialness believes. Spiritual giants use the first law of chaos: The reality is different for everybody (T-23.II.2) which is what Renard’s quote is pointing us toward understanding. This cannot be said enough: Spiritually special “giants” teach their ego interpretation of the truth, i.e., many different forms of idols meant to restore God’s Love and maintain the separation. If here is the heart of the problem, then it’s probably a good idea to actually want to appreciate this to help you learn when you’re choosing an idol, i.e., the ego.

The practical application of the Holy Spirit’s purpose is incredibly simple, but it’s unequivocal. Actually, in order to be simple it must be unequivocal (T-17.Vi.1:1-2). Jesus keeps saying that this can be a very simple course… why it’s simple: It’s unequivocal. You will find not two different ways of interpreting this course. The Course is what it is. It says what it says. It doesn’t say different things to different people (Rules for Decision, Kenneth Wapnick).

Yet, that is precisely what spiritually special Course teachers as cult leaders are doing! Wapnick makes a really valid point that can help us understand whenever we are choosing an idol of specialness:

Have Jesus beside you here in the illusion (and notice it says Jesus and not a spiritually special Course teacher) but don’t keep it that way. Don’t keep bringing Him into the illusion. You wish to learn how to go where He’s (Kenneth Wapnick, parenthesis addition mine).

Therefore, it’s imperative that you will be trying to the Holy Spirit in place of an idol to teach you. What meaning is first, idols are our own forms of specialness which we all act out inside our lives for some reason or another. However, this also includes not projecting our specialness desires onto others by not selecting a spiritually special Course teacher as a cult special idol thereby making that form of ego into an alternative to the Holy Spirit as our teacher which is the same as an alternative for God’s Love.

Think of it. Cult leaders or the spiritually special do not believe laws apply for them whether they are breaking them outright or merely skirting the edges. History is filled with examples. Actually, they don’t even think ethics affect them. They’re outside everything because they’re “giants” chosen by God to accomplish his work whether as leaders or group members. If you select to endorse their specialness, you select specialness for yourself because we are most of the same. It’s not true joining because it brings together what’s first considered to be separate but isn’t really separate in reality. Belief in separation is reinforced, i.e., fragmentation is created to seem real which divides the Sonship. There’s no other reason on the level of your head for why some are “in” the group and others are “out.”

Hence, the dream is a dream of devastation designed to conceal love and usurp God (Echoes of Eternity video on YouTube, Kenneth Wapnick). Therefore, it cannot be kind to ourselves or these spiritually special Course teachers to help keep choosing idols of specialness to restore God’s Love whether we are joining inside their dream of specialness or making our own. There’s no difference.
